   Variational Formulation of Planar Linearized Elasticity with Incompatible Kinematics.

   We present a variational characterization of mechanical equilibrium in the planar strain regime for systems with incompatible kinematics. For non-simply connected domains, we show that the equilibrium problem for a non-liftable strain-stress pair can be reformulated as a well-posed minimization problem for the Airy potential of the system. We characterize kinematic incompatibilities on internal boundaries as rotational or translational mismatches, in agreement with Volterra’s modeling of disclinations and dislocations. Finally, we establish that the minimization problem for the Airy potential can be reduced to a finite-dimensional optimization involving cell formulas.

   This work investigates isotropic thin plates where out-of-plane deformations arise due to membrane kinematic incompatibility of rotational type, specifically Volterra wedge disclinations, which are commonly observed in metal plates and graphene. Theoretical results are presented to guarantee the existence and regularity of equilibrium solutions in the presence of a finite number of disclinations and a dead load, under clamped boundary conditions. To solve the equilibrium equations, a numerical implementation is developed and applied to a series of parametric test studies. The finite element method adopted follows the Discontinuous Galerkin approach using continuous elements.

   Automatized Platform for Bandgap Optimization in Diarylethene Derivatives via Structural Substitutions

   This study presents an automated framework for discovering Diarylethene derivatives with specific HOMO-LUMO bandgaps by integrating first-principles calculations with evolutionary optimization algorithms. We develop a protocol for performing automatic, parallel Density Functional Theory calculations using Turbomole, enabled by the Atomic Simulation Environment Python wrapper. This integration allows for fully autonomous evolutionary searches, removing the need for human intervention. To evaluate our platform, we conduct searches within the chemical space of Diarylethene using two optimization strategies: A “local” strategy, which explores local neighborhoods, and a “glocal” strategy, which combines local exploration with memory of past achievements.
